PHOTOGRAPHS
2004 Summit Duty

Yesterday... like today:

This picture was taken July 1915 in the Sitgreaves National Forest, Arizona.  The "Deer Spring Tower" was nothing more then an outdoor platform were a lookout was able to make fire detection by using a make-shift "Osborne" fire finder.  This simple version of the Osborne consited of a pair of sights affixed to a ruler, placed on top of a map.

During the 2004 fire season, our lookouts will be retruning to South Mount Hawkins very much the same way in order to keep a "fire watch" on the San Gabriel Mountains.  Each lookout will be equiped with a map, radio, weather kit, and a pair of binoculars.

Keep watch on this page when our "duty" begins.
