OUT ON THE TOWN

April 14, 2004 - San Dimas, CA

Ric Opalka has opened a booth at the San Dimas Street Fair held on the second Wednesday of the month.

With the help of MANY of the members of the Angeles National Forest Fire Lookout Association, we had on hand a model fire lookout tower of South Mount Hawkins, a four panel display board, a complete historical listing of 23 towers of the Angeles National Forest, two donation boxes, T-Shirts for sale, old parts from the actual tower, and even charity candy bars for sale.

Part of our Charter is "Public Education" regarding fire lookouts, and about the role of fire in the natural environment.  Many people stopped by to see our booth and hear our message.
Inside the booth, the new model tower is put on display and the cash starts flowing in right away.  People are very interested in our program, not just the tower.  When we would get a donation, we would ring a bell several times and cheer.

Sometimes it would startle our guests, but everyone smiled!

Handouts were available and a form on the clip board was for people that were interested in joining ANFFLA.

Next to our book of pictures of the tower are actual parts of the burned tower.  A piece of wood, an insulator, hinges, molten glass, clasps, and a few nails make up a few of the peaces.
Jim talks to a few visitors about the 23 historic towers that were once in the Angeles National Forest.  The picture is below.  We didn't have an esil for the display but we should have one by the next show.
Here is the picture of the 23 towers from the front side.  Pam did a great job putting this display together, and it wasn't her first.  She has made this display before and will use hers for when she sets up a booth.
Here is the display that shows:

1. Our ANFFLA Program

2. Fire Education *

3. Images of South Mount Hawkins

4. A tribute to Wildland Fire Fighters and Volunteers

* Pictures for our fire education were provided by generous permission from Karen Wattenmaker Photography.  Please visit her website for some wonderful examples of fire effects and the environment.

More visitors stop by and pick up some flyers while others hear about our fire education messages.

A few visitors had stories they had to tell us about.  One visitor used to know one of the historic "paid" fire lookouts when the towers were staffed.

Another told us about how we could design the new tower with more modern architecture (but we are going to restore it as it was).

As the sun starts to set, we find that we have no lights!

But to our rescue the fellow next to us brought over a cord, and a light and set it all up for us.  He also took a Volunteer Application and is interested in joining our program too.

That's the spirit!

Another shirt sold for South Mount Hawkins Fund.

Hope sits in the background and answers questions regarding the fire education images on the big board.  She also guards the Charity Candy from any of us that are getting a bit hungry!

We hope to add these shirts for sale via this website soon, but if you want one you can write us at:

ANFFLA
Att: SMH Shirt
PO Box 1409
Arcadia, CA 91077

Please state size and quantity.  The cost is $15.00 per shirt plus $5.00 shipping and handling for a reasonable amount of shirts.

A visitor, Tom, purchases a shirt from Pam, (President of ANFFLA) for $15.00 and he makes an additional $5.00 donation on top of that.  We rang the bell and as an extra bonus, he even got a big hug from Hope for his contribution.

Hope had asked if maybe he would come back again next Month and make another contribution.   hehehe  What some of us do for this organization.

Pam says goodbye to Jim as he must leave while a new "applicant" signs up for duty as a Volunteer Fire Lookout.  After awhile, it was time to take down the whole booth.  Thank you to all the members that made this event happen.

It was a great day at the fair and a lot of information was exchanged, and more money was raised by people who care, and want to see us...
